Cuba has once again experienced a complete blackout

Posted on 11/09/2025

A massive outage on the morning of September 10 left almost all of Cuba without power, the fourth complete collapse of the country's power grid in less than a year.

Reuters reports this.

According to official government reports, the power grid failure occurred at 9:14 a.m. local time on September 10. Cuba's Ministry of Energy and the National Electricity Union confirmed a "total blackout" and said the cause of the failure was being investigated.

Hospitals, airports and other critical facilities are running on backup generators, while the vast majority of the country's 9.7 million people are without power.

Previously, it took two to three days to fully restore power supply.

According to Reuters, Cuba's energy system is based on outdated oil-fired power plants. The situation has been exacerbated by a reduction in fuel imports from Venezuela, Russia and Mexico, which has effectively put the island's energy sector on the brink of survival.
