The Communist Party of Russia on Sunday marked Pioneer Day, a holiday dedicated to the pioneer movement of the Soviet Union, with an inauguration ceremony for a modern youth organization on Red Square. Although the Pioneers organization was dissolved after the collapse of the USSR, Russian lawmakers approved the creation of a new youth movement in 2022 type "Pioneers" to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Soviet era organization.
The new movement, the First Movement, was sanctioned by the European Union in February 2024 for “supporting… actions that undermine and threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine, as well as stability and security in Ukraine.” ”
