During the eruption, the volcano spewed thick gray ash to a height of 5,000 meters for five minutes.
Volcanic earthquakes are still intense, so eruptions remain a possibility, said Hendra Gunawan, head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation.
It is noted that after the eruption on Friday, the center raised the danger level from level 2 to level 3. This means expanding the radius of the area from which people need to be evacuated. Local authorities have prepared tents, but there has not yet been an order to remove local residents.
Officials advised residents and tourists not to conduct any activities within a 5 km radius of the Ibu volcano crater. More than 13 thousand people live in this territory, according to Gunawan.
The 1325 m high Ibu volcano is located on the northwestern coast of the remote island of Halmahera.
