Blinken revealed the contents of the bilateral security agreement between the United States and Ukraine

Posted on 18/05/2024

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said a potential bilateral security agreement with Ukraine would provide military assistance in various sectors, moving the country closer to NATO membership.

Blinken said the security agreements Ukraine is currently negotiating will strengthen its “bridge to NATO.”

“Under our own ten-year agreement, the United States will support defense and security across a range of core capabilities—from its air force to air defense, from drones to mine clearance,” he added.

The Secretary of State also hinted at the agreement's mechanism for consultation in the event of an attack on Ukraine: "If Russia or someone else attacks Ukraine, we will immediately work with Ukraine at the highest level to agree on how to help you defeat the threat."

In addition, Blinken believes that a security agreement between Ukraine and the United States will help speed up efforts to build a Ukrainian military industry, allowing it to rely less on military assistance from other countries in the long term, while also promoting economic growth.

“All these measures will ensure that at the moment when the conditions are met and the allies agree, the invitation of Ukraine and its entry into the Alliance will proceed quickly and smoothly,” the US Secretary of State concluded.
