Peace Summit: how many countries have confirmed participation

Posted on 22/05/2024

The Swiss Foreign Ministry notes that to date, 50 delegations out of 160 invited have confirmed participation in the event.

Participation in the Global Peace Summit, which will take place on June 15-16 in Switzerland, has been confirmed by 50 countries out of 160 invited. This was reported by the local publication Swissinfo, citing a statement by the head of the Communications Department of the Swiss Foreign Ministry, Nicolas Bidot.

Currently, 50 delegations have announced their arrival. Those who confirmed their intentions include European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister George Maloney, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The Swiss Foreign Ministry is satisfied with the number of responses, but strives to see an even higher number.

“There are big European countries there, but we would also like to have as many countries from the Global South as possible because we want an open discussion about all the possibilities and thoughts about peace in Ukraine. Therefore, we want to have numbers and North-South representation,” Bedeau said.

According to him, Russia will not be at the meeting.

“We did not invite Russia because the Russians constantly say that they are not interested. We are in the preparatory phase, we will not make peace as such at Bürgenstock, but we would really like to begin the process of involving Russia. Therefore, we maintain contact with them,” assured Bido.

The meeting is due to take place on June 15 and 16 at the five-star Bürgenstock Hotel in Lucerne in central Switzerland.

As you know, the Peace Summit will be held on June 15-16 in Switzerland. Ukraine hopes for the participation of 80-100 countries in this event. The Office of the President ruled out Russia's participation in the first Peace Summit, but there is a possibility that its representatives will be at the second summit.
