Russian strikes cut power to nearly half a million homes in Ukraine

Posted on 24/05/2024

Russia's shelling of Ukrainian energy infrastructure led to widespread power outages at night in the northeast of Sumy and Kharkiv regions, Ukraine's Energy Ministry said on Monday.

Moscow has stepped up attacks on Ukraine's energy facilities in recent months, knocking out much of its production and causing blackouts and power rationing across the country.

“The enemy fired at the energy infrastructure of the Sumy region overnight. More than 400 thousand households in Sumy and other cities and villages of the region were cut off from power supply,” the Ministry of Energy reported.

According to him, electricity was “partially restored” in the morning.

The Sumy region borders Russia and has been a target throughout Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. However, here, as in the neighboring Kharkov region, there is an increase in strikes.

“Consumers in the Kharkov region were also disconnected,” the ministry said.

Kyiv says Moscow is stepping up attacks ahead of the arrival of American weapons and equipment and ahead of nationwide celebrations on May 9, when Russia commemorates the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.
