How we help Ukrainians doesn't necessarily stop Russians: senior NATO official

Posted on 28/05/2024

Rob Bauer, chairman of the NATO Military Committee, believes that even the timely and effective provision of necessary military assistance to Ukraine will not necessarily dissuade Russia from offensive operations.

Bauer stated that "it's important to understand and explain that anything we do won't necessarily stop the Russians from doing anything."

“What we can do is make sure that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are as prepared as possible and have the necessary equipment and the right ammunition to resist any Russian offensive. What we do and how we help Ukrainians does not necessarily stop the Russians,” he added.

However, the head of NATO's Military Committee adds that they have "passed" in containing Russian soldiers, since Russia has already carried out a full-scale invasion and the war has lasted 813 days so far.

“The Russians will continue because they have not achieved any of their strategic goals. That's why they continue. And that’s why Ukraine must continue [to defend itself – ed.], not to mention the fact that they want to return the taken territory.” from them,” Bauer said.

Ukraine was forced to ration ammunition due to a months-long wait for the aid to be passed by the US Congress, as well as a delay in the EU's initiative to send ammunition.

The head of the NATO Military Committee also stated that the current Russian offensive in the north of the Kharkov region will not lead to a strategic breakthrough.
